Sheila Joynes, Timpani
What instrument do you play? Timpani/Percussion
How long have you been playing and why did you choose your instrument? - I've only been playing percussion for 3 years having taken it up because my hands and arms wouldn't allow me to continue playing cello and double bass.
How long have you played with OSJ? Since April 2017.
What is your favourite piece of music? Oh gosh!! Probably Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony but there are SO many!
What was your most memorable performance? My debut on timps - Beethoven violin concerto. It starts with timpani solo - I had had two lessons and had been playing for two months!
Where and what would you like to perform but haven’t yet? I'd love to play the timpani part for Rutter Requiem. I've done both the solo cello and the solo harp parts in the past - I'd love to have a chance to play the timps/glockenspiel.
Who is your favourite composer? Again there are so many; Debussy for piano, Elgar, Gilbert and Sullivan!!
What is your favourite part about playing in OSJ? I love playing smaller orchestral repertoire - Beethoven, Brahms etc. I led the cello section in Chandos Symphony Orchestra for 25 years and enjoyed the huge romantic music but I missed classical music.
